    Program:

    The Master of Science Degree in Bilingual Education and the Bilingual Extension program offered at Mercy College permit qualified applicants who hold an initial teaching certificate to earn a bilingual teacher certificate.

    The Master's degree program may lead to professional certification depending on the credentials held by the candidate. Degree seeking students must complete a major project as a capstone activity, and complete appropriate field experiences at the appropriate grade level of the certificate. Students preparing to teach in bilingual classrooms must also achieve a passing score on the Bilingual Education Assessment exam to be eligible for certification.

    Curriculum:

    The 36 credit Master of Science Degree prepares students to teach limited English proficient children from diverse cultural backgrounds in monolingual, special education, and bilingual mainstream classrooms.

    Courses in the Master of Science in Bilingual Education include: Education in Today's Schools; Foundations in Education for Students with Disabilities; Cultural Perspectives and the Teaching Learning Process; Teaching English as a Second Language; and Education Evaluation and Assessment from Early Childhood through Adolescence and for Students with Disabilities.

    Frequently Asked Questions:

    Do I need to be proficient in another language? Which language?
    Yes, you must be proficient in English and in another language which is used for instruction in NYS public schools. Languages other than English presently used in NYS public schools include: French Creole, Korean, Russian, Spanish and Urdu.

    Should I have majored in education as an undergraduate?
    No. However, you must have completed, at a minimum, a 30-credit concentration in a liberal arts subject or major, and be proficient in a language other than English.

    What are the program pre-requisites?
    Students interested in pursuing a NYS bilingual extension certificate must have or be eligible for an initial certificate in early childhood, childhood, or a content area subject, other than a foreign language.
