Program:

The 39 credit Master of Science Degree in Childhood Education, Grades 1-6, leads to initial or professional certification. Students pursuing multiple certificates, such as certification in Early Childhood Education, Birth-Grade 2, or in Students with Disabilities, may be required to complete additional student teaching and field experiences.

Students will complete the required courses for degree conferral and the additional courses specific to the certification area(s) desired. Students seeking an initial certificate in the Childhood Education program must complete the Division of Education comprehensive examination prior to graduation.

Students seeking professional certification in the Childhood Education program will be required to complete a thesis project. Professional certification requires an initial certificate and three years of teaching experience in the area of the certificate.

Curriculum:

The common focus of the education programs at Mercy College is to develop the necessary knowledge, skills, and strategies for effective teaching in urban and suburban schools. Students are taught to integrate practices as a basis for providing effective teaching and learning in the classroom.

Students will be required to complete the required core courses and additional courses specific to the certification areas(s) desired. Students seeking an initial certificate in the Childhood Education program must complete the Division of Education comprehensive examination prior to graduation. Professional certification requires three years of teaching experience.

Teacher candidates are required to complete the prescribed Core Courses as well as additional courses, specific to the elected certification areas(s). Degree seeking students completing the Childhood Education program must pass the Division of Education comprehensive examination, prior to graduation.

Students completing a M.S. degree to acquire NYS Professional Certification must have documented proof that they've taught successfully for three years in the area of the certificate. Those students desiring multiple teaching certificates may be required to complete additional student teaching and field experiences.

Can I get certified in Teaching Students with Disabilities?
Yes, you can get certified in Teaching Students with Disabilities in the following programs: Childhood Education, Grade 1-6; Early Childhood Education, Birth-Grade 2; Middle Childhood Education, Grades 5-9; Adolescence Education, 7-12.

Are there alternative certification programs that you offer?
In addition to the traditional programs, we offer alternative certificates through the Individual Certification Plan for Teachers (ICPT) and the Mercy College Teaching Fellows Program. Is there a culminating activity for the completion of these programs?
Students in all programs with the exception of Bilingual Education and Teaching Literacy are required to successfully complete a written comprehensive examination. Students in the Bilingual Education and Teaching Literacy programs must complete an action research project to be eligible for graduation.
