    Program:

    The purpose of the Advanced Certificate in School Building Leadership is to prepare practicing teachers and other eligible school personnel to assume leadership and supervisory roles within multi-faceted and diverse school systems.

    The program of study in the Advanced Certificate in School Building Leadership program includes course work in management and supervision, as well as current issues in educational administration. The program includes an administrative internship and qualifies the student for New York State provisional certification as a school building leader. This certification is appropriate for such positions as principal, supervisor, department administrator, assistant principal, and coordinator.

    If a student completes the program and has a total of 60 graduate credits, he/she is also eligible for permanent certification as a school district leader. This certification is appropriate for all central office positions.

    Career Opportunities:

    Graduates of the School Building Leadership Advanced Certificate program may pursue positions as school principal, supervisor, department administrator, central office administrator, assistant principal, and coordinator.

    Curriculum:

    The program includes courses on cultural pluralism, becoming a professional school administrator and supervisor, managing the teaching learning process, the individual in organizations, organization of the community relations program, school finance, school law, and grants and evaluation strategies for leaders, as well as an internship component.

    What is difference between the Master's Degree and the Professional Diploma?
    They are both 30 credit programs and lead to certification in School Building Leadership and School District Leadership. There are three courses in the Professional Diploma that are not included in the Master's Degree, and similarly there are three courses in the Master's Degree that are not included in the Professional Diploma. However, a student who already has a Master's Degree in another area may opt to pursue a second Master's Degree in School Building Leadership

    Are there any scholarships available for this program?
    Students can be nominated for a scholarship by the superintendents of schools of their respective school districts and can be awarded a one-third tuition discount for the duration of the program.

    How many years of teaching experience are required for matriculation into the program?
    Two years of paid teaching or specialty area experience are required.

    What is the culminating activity for the completion of this program?
    Students are required to successfully complete a written comprehensive examination.
