    Program:

    The Master of Science Degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) prepares degree candidates to become knowledgeable with the philosophical basis for acquiring a second language, as well as with practical hands-on strategies related to determining and developing language proficiency and cognitive development in English Language Learners. Integral aspects of the degree program are acculturation to U.S. culture, English language instruction for social and academic development, and the use of technology both for language development and content learning.

    Admission requirements for the Master of Science Degree in TESOL include 12 credits of college level course work in a language other than English, six credits in literacy, and a 30 credit undergraduate major or its equivalent in one of the liberal arts or sciences.

    Curriculum:

    The Master of Science in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages program leads to either an initial or professional NYS teaching certificate. The 36 credit program requires completion of core course requirements and additional content specific courses. All degree seeking students pursuing an initial certificate in TESOL must successfully complete a comprehensive examination prior to graduation. Students seeking professional certification will be required to complete a research project. Professional certification requires three years of teaching experience. Students pursuing additional certificates may be required to complete additional student teaching and field experiences.

    Frequently Asked Questions:

    Do I need to have majored in education as an undergraduate?
    No. Your undergraduate degree should be in a liberal arts major. If not, you must have completed a 30 credit sequence in a liberal arts content area.

    What are program pre-requisites?
    Students interested in NYS TESOL Certification need to have completed 6 credits in English, Math, Science and Social Studies, as well as 12 credits in a Foreign Language. (Sign language is considered a foreign language.)

    What if I already know a foreign language?
    Mercy will accept credits earned through CLEP examinations.
