Program:
The Master of Science in Urban Education program was founded in 2002 in response to the growing need for alternative certification - Master's programs in New York City. Mercy College partnered with the New York City Department of Education to provide an innovative two-year program for new teachers to take coursework and pursue certification concurrent with their full-time teaching assignments in New York City public schools.
The Master of Science Degree in Urban Education is pursued by students enrolled in an alternate certification program called The New York City Teaching Fellows Program. Students complete required courses while teaching full-time in classroom placements in New York City public schools on Transitional-B certificates.
Students complete common core courses and additional courses specific to the New York State certification area(s) desired.

Curriculum:
At the heart of the Mercy College Teaching Fellows Program lies a commitment to help beginning teachers think critically about their development as reflective practitioners in order to become effective educators in urban school settings. Program developers have outlined the Essentials of Effective Practice, a set of interrelated abilities fundamental to effective teaching that constitute the foundation of the curriculum.
Throughout the two year program, students engage in coursework and assessments that support them on a path towards developing competency in all six Essentials: Commitment to Learning, Deliberate Practice, Accountability for Student Learning, Teaching the Whole Student, Improvisation, and Educational Leadership.
This 36 credit Master's Degree program takes a blended curricular approach to meet the needs of all Teaching Fellows students regardless of specific certification titles. The MS in Urban Education defines effective teaching as differentiated instruction.
