    Program:

The English major is the best preparation a Mercy College student can have for any career or profession. It offers a way to discover, enjoy, and reflect on universal themes in great literature that show us what it means to be human. In addition, it fosters the ability to communicate effectively: to write correctly, to read and think critically, and to speak effectively. These are the skills that provide a clear advantage for success in a business or profession.

"Mercy's English literature professors foster and strengthen our individual creativity within the English language, while astounding us with its complexity and beauty. It is impossible not to admire their knowledge and utmost dedication to the language and their invaluable assistance to us."

"What I like about being an English literature major is that I get to explore beyond my own boundaries. I can meet fictitious or real characters from the past or present, from any country, real or imagined, and learn about human strengths and weaknesses. These characters and situations have, through the author's depiction, taught me more about human behavior than Behavioral Science or Psychology."

    Curriculum:

The three required courses for all English majors are Poetics, Survey I, and Survey II, which provide grounding in literary form and content. Students then must choose one course from each of four categories: classical, social/cultural, genre, and historical. The remainder of the English electives can be taken from any of these four distributions. Students can choose from a wide variety of courses, including American, British, African, African-American, Latin American, and Caribbean literature, as well as courses in grammar, linguistics, creative writing, and oral interpretation of literature.
