    Program:

Imagine a program that is specifically designed to prepare you for success in veterinary medical school. The Mercy College Pre-Veterinary Medicine program is unique in its veterinary-oriented curriculum because of the caring and experience of its faculty and its ability to provide hands-on clinical experience. The program leads to a BS in Veterinary Technology with a specialization in Pre-Veterinary Medicine.

The Mercy College program immerses students in veterinary medicine, including courses in animal physiology, veterinary pharmacology, clinical laboratory techniques and small and large animal medicine. To maximize clinical and research experience, students may elect to complete externships in a number of prestigious institutions, including the Animal Medical Center, Bronx Zoo, New York Aquarium, New York Medical College to name a few. This level of specialized preparation for veterinary school is unparalleled. The curriculum is academically rigorous and challenging.

"Mercy's Pre-Veterinary Medicine Program is much, much more than a series of classes. The extraordinary faculty invests almost as much time outside the classroom as inside, providing individual advising, planning and discussion about what veterinary medicine involves, how you as a student can best make a contribution and gain personal satisfaction, and what new and exciting opportunities exist in this ever-changing area of study. I can genuinely say that I would not be a veterinarian today, enjoying the best profession one can have, if it were not for the solid academic background, wise advise and supportive encouragement that all of the professionals at Mercy gave to me. If your interests lie in veterinary studies, your pathway should start at Mercy College!"

"I love anesthesia but it's probably because of your teaching that I love it so much. You are organized, enthusiastic, and made it quite memorable. I know you don't hear this often enough, but thank you for being such a great teacher. I use 90% of what you taught me in the real world."

"Now that I have finished my first year at the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Minnesota, I wanted to let you know that Mercy has done a phenomenal job in preparing me. I was going to list things specifically, but then I would list almost all of the classes. Basically, I view vet school as just an expansion on the strong background that I got at Mercy-seriously!"

    Frequently Asked Questions:

What are my chances of acceptance into veterinary school?
The Mercy College Pre-Veterinary Medicine program boasts extraordinary success in student acceptance rate to U.S. Veterinary Schools. Strong academic advising is essential. Each student receives one-on-one counseling in scheduling, grade review, and ultimately selection of veterinary schools.

In addition, Mercy has a formal articulation arrangement with Ross University, guaranteeing admission to students who complete Mercy's Pre-Veterinary Medicine program, maintain a minimum of a 3.25 GPA, and meet other reasonable criteria.

In what other ways is the program exceptional?
Mercy's Pre-Veterinary Medicine program is specifically designed to immerse you in veterinary medicine. When you read the undergraduate catalog and Pre-Veterinary Medicine program brochure, you will note that courses focus on animal science and medicine. For, example, you will take courses in animal physiology, veterinary pharmacology, veterinary clinical laboratory techniques, and small and large animal medicine. No other pre-veterinary medicine program offers this level of specialized preparation for veterinary school. In contrast, other pre-veterinary programs, even those in ivy league colleges, are oriented toward human medicine. In addition, all Veterinary Technology courses at Mercy are taught by veterinarians or licensed veterinary technicians with considerable practical expertise.

What is the first step in the admissions process?
Click on "Apply Now" on the Mercy homepage and complete the application for admission to Mercy College, or call 1-877-MERCY GO to arrange for an appointment with an Admissions Counselor. If you bring your completed application form and copies of your high school and/or college transcripts with you at the time of your appointment, the Admissions Counselor will evaluate your transcripts and make an acceptance decision. In addition, you may be required to take the Mercy College Placement Examination, which is used to place students in appropriate-level mathematics and English courses. If applicable, an appointment to take this exam will be scheduled at the time of your interview. Once you have met with an Admissions Counselor and taken the Placement Examination, you will meet with an Academic Advisor to plan a course schedule for your first semester at Mercy College.

Can I attend the program part-time?
Yes. You can take as little as one course per semester. The program is designed to be flexible enough to accommodate working adults, and many students attend part-time. Classes are held at various times throughout the day, beginning as early as 8:00 AM and ending as late as 10:00 PM. Many classes are available on weekends. Even if you work five days a week, it is possible to complete the program within a reasonable period of time.

What type of student is well-suited for the program?
The pre-veterinary curriculum is academically rigorous and challenging. The student must be highly motivated, with exceptional learning skills, a strong ability to focus, and a dedicated interest in veterinary medicine. The fact that the student must have love and compassion for animals is self-evident. However, because the practice of veterinary medicine is largely devoted to interaction with clients and staff, empathy and concern for people, and the capacity to work cooperatively and productively with others are indispensable qualities.

What if I am unable to maintain a high enough GPA to be accepted into veterinary medical school?
You can still have a highly rewarding career in the field of veterinary medicine by earning a BS in Veterinary Technology. For more information, click on Veterinary Technology.

Should I finish the General Education requirements before starting my major?
No! Because of the rigor of the program a combination of General Education courses and Major-Level courses is recommended for all students at the ENGL111 and MATH 116 level.
