    Legal Studies Specializations:

    Program:

    The Legal Studies program is designed for students who are interested in a career in the law. The program gives you the opportunity to learn from legal professionals. Practicing attorneys will help you develop the oral communication, writing and critical thinking skills necessary to succeed in law school.

    Whether you are interested in pursuing a career in the law, business or government, the student who majors in general Legal Studies will be introduced to the techniques of successful negotiation and mediation and will have the chance to develop these skills in more advanced courses.

    Graduates of the Legal Studies program are prepared for Law School, Careers in Politics & Administration, Interest Representation (Lobbying), and Conflict Management.

    Curriculum:

    The program consists of courses such as: Constitutional Law and Policy, The Art of Legal Reasoning, Argumentation Debate and the Courtroom, Managing Human Conflict, The Art and Practice of Mediation, Law of Evidence, Introduction to Legal Studies, Aging and the Law, Employment Law and the Structure and Form of English.

    What are the benefits of majoring in Legal Studies?
    The Legal Studies major is a good course of study for a student who is interested in going to law school. The program is designed to help the student develop the oral communication, writing and critical thinking skills needed to be successful in government and legal fields. It is also a good course of study for those interested in a career in politics and public administration.

    Is the Legal Studies major offered online?
    A Legal Studies major may take some courses online; however, the entire program is not offered online.

    Are there internship opportunities available?
    Yes, we offer an opportunity to all students who wish to work in the legal setting through our Cooperative Education Program.

    Am I eligible for induction into an honor society?
    Students who major in Legal Studies are eligible for induction into Pi Gamma Mu, the National Honor Society for the Social Sciences. Students are eligible if you have completed 75 credits toward your degree and 15 credits toward your major at Mercy College with an overall GPA of 3.3 and a GPA of 3.4 in your major.

    Will you accept transfer credits toward the major?
    Yes, we will review courses from accredited institutions and accept up to 18 credits in transfer toward the major.
