Program:
The Master of Science Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy is registered by the New York State Education Department, Office of Professional Affairs to offer the MS degree for licensure-eligibility in Marriage and Family Therapy. This 45-credit program includes coursework in family systems, clinical assessment and psychotherapy of dysfunctional families, prevention of emotional problems arising from domestic violence, illness, unemployment, and the court system. Practicum requirements are met through Mercy College's many affiliations with agencies, mental health facilities, hospitals, and private practice settings. These affiliations provide supervision by licensed health care professionals with experience and expertise fulfilling the required supervision credentials of New York State before being able to sit for the licensure exam for Marriage and Family Therapy. Most graduates are able to complete the program in two years through part-time attendance of evening classes. Courses may be taken as nonmatriculation status in order to complete licensure requirements.
Graduates of the program are expected to be competent in: - Identifying dysfunctional relationships between couples, individuals, children, extended family and employers; and to assess adaptive coping in preventing adjustment problems.
- Providing traditional and family-oriented psychotherapies to help individuals and families facing mental illnesses, substance abuse, family violence, divorce; and to assist in problem interactions with educational, foster care, adoption and legal agencies.
- Preventing serious disorders that may stem from homelessness, poverty, unemployment, immigration, or health care issues including managing chronic illnesses and access to medical benefits.
To qualify for employment in a variety of settings including but not limited to: private practice; inpatient facilities; employee assistance programs; family courts; prisons; health maintenance organizations; community mental health agencies; or hospital settings.To acquire the skills and competencies required by New York State licensure and to complete the licensure examination successfully. To be eligible to offer services reimbursable my managed care providers.

Career Opportunities:
Graduates have the opportunity to work as a licensed marriage and family therapist in an agency, hospital, or court system. Other possible career opportunities include working in a private practice setting as psychotherapist for families dealing with mental illness, substance abuse, medical diagnostic procedures and chronic illness, family violence, child abuse and foster care systems, couples therapy, and child family therapists.

Will I be licensed in New York State as a Marriage and Family Therapist and be able to practice as a psychotherapist?
Upon successfully completing the MS in Marriage and Family Therapy curriculum, satisfying the 1500 hours of supervised experience( some of these can be satisfied during the program) and passing the New York State examination you will be able to provide services which fall under the category of family and marriage therapy.
Will I be able to conduct psychotherapy with individuals, couples, children, work or school-related personnel as well as "families"?
The state law broadly defines family as individuals, couples, children or other groups who are affected within the context of the family.
Can I get reimbursed by health care and managed care facilities?
After January 1, 2006 only New York State licensed psychologists, physicians, physician assistants, social workers, nurses, mental health counselors, marriage and family therapists can practice under the title of "Marriage and Family Therapist." Each health care maintenance organization has their own requirements for reimbursement for providing family therapy and family therapy without the patient. In most states outside of New York the licensed marriage and family therapist is recognized and able to participate in networks providing mental health services.
Can I continue my education and achieve a PsyD or PhD?
This program is a 45 credit program. We work with each student who desires to go on to a doctoral program. Each program has its own rules on how many transfer credits they will accept.
Do I need to be from a psychology program?
No. This program is available tto individuals from many diverse backgrounds, including, nursing, social work, pastoral counseling, criminal justice, education or other health care professions. There is a requirement that at least one undergratuate course in methodology or research design be completed with a B or better grade.
