  Legal Nurse Consultant Program

 
 

The Mercy College Legal Nurse Consultant Program is an American Bar Association approved program offered at the White Plains campus. The program prepares students to enter the legal field as highly trained legal nurse consultants. The program is a 5 1/2 month day program or a 9 1/2 month evening program. The program is offered in the spring (February), summer (June) and Fall (September), provided there is sufficient enrollment. To apply for admission to the program a student must have attained an Associate's Degree or Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university, must be a registered nurse, possess a current registered professional nurse license (from any state), and have at least 2000 hours of recent clinical experience.

Internships are available to students seeking a practical application of their classroom studies. Internships are not required but are highly recommended.

The Legal Nurse Consultant Program offers FREE placement assistance to students and graduates. The Legal Nurse Consultant Program cannot and does not guarantee employment.

The Legal Nurse Consultant Program is a cohort program whereby students must take the courses as they are offered, not as they choose to take them. Students must satisfactorily complete all courses in the Legal Nurse Consultant Program to be awarded the American Bar Association approved Certificate. Students in the Legal Nurse Consultant Program take some of the courses in conjunction with the Paralegal Studies Certificate Program. The LNC students will also take several courses designed specifically for the LNC. If the LNC student chooses to complete all the courses in the Paralegal Studies Certificate Program as well, the LNC student will also be awarded the Paralegal Studies Certificate. Professors in the LNC program are all nurse-attorneys. Professors in the Paralegal Program are practicing attorneys, judges and paralegals.

The courses included in the LNC program are: Introduction to the Paralegal Profession, Introduction to Legal Nurse Consulting, Legal Research and Writing, Litigation and Trial Preparation, Probate, Trusts and Estates, Computers and the Law, Business Organizations, Legal Ethics, Career Planning, Advanced Seminar: Litigation, Module I�Medical Malpractice, Module II�Administrative Law, Module III�Risk Management, Module IV�Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), Advanced Seminar: Medical Malpractice, Risk Management, ADR. The curriculum is 313 required clock hours.

The Legal Nurse Consultant Program is approved by the New York State Nurses Association Council on Continuing Education.

The Mercy College Law Library is located at the White Plains Campus, the Dobbs Ferry Campus and the Bronx Campus.

Tuition: $5000.00 plus a $25 non-refundable application fee plus the cost of books.

Is there an application process for admission to the program?
Yes. The application process includes:

  • the Legal Nurse Consultant Program application with the $25 application fee (non-refundable)
  • two reference letters
  • an official copy of the student's undergraduate transcript
  • a 200 word statement explaining the student's reasons for wanting to become a Legal Nurse Consultant
  • a copy of the student's current registered professional nurse license
  • a personal interview with the director of the program

Is there financial aid available for the program?

Where do Legal Nurse Consultants practice?
Legal Nurse Consultants practice in a variety of settings including law firms (plaintiff and defense), hospitals, and other healthcare facilities (private and public) and insurance companies.

What job responsibilities do Legal Nurse Consultants have?
Legal Nurse Consultants can evaluate medical malpractice claims, prepare expert witnesses for trial, serve as expert witnesses at trial, draft necessary legal documents, assist in risk management issues, evaluate worker compensation claims, assist counsel in trial preparation, assist counsel at trial, and more.

The placement office has assisted in placing students in both part-time and full- time Legal Nurse Consultant positions.
