Barbara Keckler

I am an Associate Professor, at Mercy College, School of Education who has had a lengthy experience as a literacy specialist in the state of New York. As a literacy specialist, I worked with Title 1, Adult Basic Education, College Preparatory, as well as Teacher Education programs in Westchester County, New York.
In my role as a teacher educator I currently prepare literacy candidates for practical classroom experiences by providing an environment that encourages active reading of course materials as well as reflecting, researching, and using effective literacy instructional practices and assessment techniques.  My areas of expertise include emergent literacy, diagnosis and prescription, remediation of reading and study skills as well as computer-assisted instruction. I have also co-authored a textbook entitled College Reading and Study Skills.
In addition, for the past 20 years, I have worked to encourage outreach programs for Mercy College. I collaborated with the Dobbs Ferry School District and Cabrini Immigration Services.
