Collections Overview

The Mercy College libraries own 200,000 book titles, 15,000 audiovisual titles (mainly videotapes, DVD's and some music), and 1,300 magazine and journal subscriptions. All are included in the catalog. The main library at Dobbs Ferry also holds substantial backruns of many journals, generally on microfilm; the branch libraries own shorter backruns of some titles, usually on microfiche. Many of these periodicals -- and others as well -- are available full-text online; that is, several of the "Articles" databases on our Webpage will take you to magazine and journal articles.

Collections span the major subject fields except for the applied sciences. with special emphasis on the social sciences and the health, business and education professions taught at Mercy. Almost all materials are in English. Outside of literature, we have only scattered volumes in Spanish, at Bronx and Dobbs. Special collections, noted among the branches below, include the curriculum libraries and ERIC documents for Mercy education students; U.S. Government publications at Yorktown; New York and federal law; and adult ESL abridged books kept in small collections at most sites. We have a main library and 4 branches:

  • The main library at Dobbs Ferry holds about 3/4 of these books and journals - over 170,000 books and 1,000 subscriptions. Dobbs offers extra depth in the humanities, and in health and counseling. It also supplies most of Mercy's audiovisual materials. Dobbs has a Curriculum Library, a small Children's Collection, and all ERIC documents on fiche after 1980. It maintains cases and statutes in New York and federal law. It is the only collection holding the LAC/LEL ultrafiche: the Library of American Civilization and the Library of English Literature, which are reprints of history and literature books, mainly from the 19th Century

  • The Bronx branch has over 25,000 volumes, with some emphasis on recent social sciences and multicultural studies, and a strong Curriculum Library. It has all the ERIC documents on microfiche. It carries New York and federal law reporters

  • Manhattan holds 5000 books and 80 subscriptions in all their curriculum areas

  • White Plains holds over 12,000 books plus New York and federal law books and reporters, and gives extra attention to business materials

  • Yorktown, with 40,000 book volumes, also has strengths in literature and the humanities, and in education, with a growing Curriculum Library. It is our federal depository, with extensive legislative, census and other government reports

Any visitor has access to all material in any library, although only Mercy students, faculty and staff may borrow books or request interlibrary loans. Click on Circulation for the library's borrowing policies.
