Where
are the libraries?
For
campus locations and hours, go to our
"General Information" link. If you drive
to Dobbs, try to park near the main classroom building;
we're downstairs at the south end. Dobbs and other
campuses have different parking arrangements; call
the main number for that campus if you're not familiar
with the parking regulations.
Who
can use the libraries?
Anyone
can search the catalog from home or make use of anything
we have inside the library. Current Mercy students,
staff and faculty can search the databases from home,
and they can borrow the books. Students should obtain
a campus ID card, but they may borrow anyway -- as
soon as they appear on the database of current students.
Alumni
cannot search our databases from home. They can obtain a library card from the Alumni
Office (674-7303) which allows them
to borrow our books but not to get interlibrary loans.
Please
also see other Circulation
policies.
Do the libraries have places for
quiet study? For group study?
Library
space and sound-proofing are limited. At Dobbs we
ask groups to work quietly in the central area, and
leave the carrels and outlying areas for quiet study.
How
do I locate a book or AV title in the Mercy libraries?
Choose
Books
and Media Catalog, . This will take you to
a complete catalog of Mercy's books and audiovisual
titles.
To
get a general idea of what we own, select Collections.
Does
the library carry the required textbook for my course?
Only
when faculty decide to keep a copy on reserve. Dobbs'
bookstore is at the other end of Main Hall on the
G-level (674-3603.)
My
professor put some readings "on reserve." Where is
that?
Books
and articles are placed on the reserve shelves at
the Circulation Desk -- by the entrance -- so that
a whole class can have access to them. They are for
use inside the library (closed reserve) or for very
brief loans. Many instructors will be posting their
reserve readings online through ERes (Electronic
Reserve.)
What
if a book or magazine isn't at the branch I use?
From
there you can request a "system loan" for it, and
the book or article should arrive in a couple of days.
We also provide "interlibrary loan" for items held
by other colleges and public libraries.
How
do I find an article on a given topic?
Choose
Databases by Subject
and then a subject field to find a database. Periodicals Locator tells you what journals and magazineswe own
or get online. there you can often link to the full text
database (in parentheses.)
Can
I search outside of Mercy?
Choose
OTHER LIBRARIES
from the main library page. There are several links
to some public libraries, nearby colleges, and research
libraries (WorldCat.)
Can't
I get all my information off the Internet anyway?
Published
articles and books generally are not available on
the Net. And libraries are organized; the Web is not.
For
a guide to the Web, choose INTERNET
GUIDES/ TOOLS from the main
library page. For some recommended websites, choose
WEBSITES
BY SUBJECT
.
Do
you have Mercy Masters theses and other campus publications?
The
Dobbs library has Mercy's old yearbooks, and some other publications, as well as most theses from Mercy graduate programs.
Ask at the Circulation Desk.
Do
you have online sources for looking up words and other
quick reference?
Go
to ELECTRONIC REFERENCE SOURCES
on the main library page.
Can
you help me with my paper?
The
reference librarians are usually available and can
help you define a topic and locate sources -- don't
hesitate to ask us. To help you cite your sources
correctly we have brief guides and "style manuals"
for APA, MLA, etc. Or, from the bottom of our homepage, consult
the Writing
and Citation Guides.
For
more help with your writing, just make an appointment
with the Learning Center at your campus.
Can
I use the library computers for other things?
The
library terminals do access Outlook and the Internet, although we give priority to research. Note that Word and PowerPoint are available on all stations in the computer labs. For questions about the labs, or log on problems, call the Help Desk (extension 7526.)
Do the libraries have wireless connectivity?
Yes, at the Bronx, Dobbs Ferry, and Manhattan libraries. Permission and access are obtained through the college's IT department. Please see a full list of the access points and the process for obtaining connectivity at Wireless Connectivity at Mercy College.
