DOBBS FERRY CAMPUS

Main Library Renovation

  • When you’re in the library you’ll notice that the reading room in front has much open space that wasn’t there before Christmas.  We’ve discarded old indexes and reference books, and moved some materials elsewhere, in anticipation of a Title V grant that should help bring the library closer to a “learning commons” model.

Specifically, NY case law volumes were moved upstairs (after BX-) and NY statutes/forms are in the back of the reading room by the windows.  Political science books (J-) now start in the shelves right after HX-.  Remaining indexes are in a wooden book stack out front.  By Fall, after construction work, we expect to clear more room and put computers on new tables there, with the intention of integrating the computer lab -- now in the back of the library – into the library itself.  The goal is a common area where students can get help with technology, research and papers from a team of staff and librarians.

The Teaching-Learning Center now under discussion will be carved out later, perhaps where the computer lab is now.

It’s a 3-year grant; as we go along, suggestions from our library and lab users are welcome!  How do you think we can improve our services?

Library Instruction

  • The room we use to teach research to your students (Library A) was rearranged this summer for easier viewing of the computer projection. Please schedule Dobbs Ferry library instruction through Kris Wycisk at 914-674-7293, or the Reference Desk at 914-674-7257.

Borrowing Magazines and Journals

  • Dobbs Ferry faculty and staff may now borrow any of the loose issues at the main library, even the most recent.  You can take out 1 or 2 at a time (up to 3 open days) at the Circulation Desk.

OTHER ANNOUNCEMENTS

    • Please come in and let us show you what we have in your field and how to access it.  Every library is different and we’d love to introduce you to each one.

RESEARCH AND WRITING ASSISTANCE

    • Students needing extra help with a paper have two places they can go -- the Learning Centers for writing assistance, and the libraries for research assistance.
    • At Dobbs Ferry, If a student will need substantial help in finding good sources, he or she can call library reference at 914-674-7672 for an appointment with one of us.

LIBRARY COMPUTERS

    • Students and adjuncts using the public terminals in the libraries now must use their MercyConnect username and password. Faculty and staff should use their outlook login. Alumni and other library visitors must ask library personnel to log them in.

BUYING VIDEOS AND BOOKS

    • The Audio Visual software budget has been restored this year. Please contact Mustafa Sakarya at 914-674-7259 for your audiovisual orders -- and Don Ray (914-674-7429) for Dobbs Ferry book orders.  Branch requests should be sent to respective branch librarians.

NEW ELECTRONIC RESERVES PAGE

    • Our electronic reserves system has a new look, though with much the same capabilities.  Take a look through the ‘ERes link on the library main page.

LOOKING UP FULL TEXT

    • We now have access to online (full-text) articles from thousands of periodicals through our library’s databases, subscription e-journals, and journal publisher sites.
    • Our new Periodicals Locator will direct you to all our titles as our Periodicals List did before, but it will give all the full-text links precisely, up to date and free of charge.  Any paper or microfilm holding information will also be linked from “Mercy Libraries Print Holdings.”
    • If you’re searching in one database and hit a journal that is full-text there or in a different database, you should see a note that says “Full-text link,” or you may find a source via an icon for “Article Linker.”

Note: If and when you run into a false hit or other linking problems, please let us know. Given our full-text and interlibrary loan capabilities, we don’t want our students paying for research articles.
