A Little about Search Engines............

There are basically two types of Search Engines:

  • Crawlers - creep the web periodically and create automatic lists from their findings
  • Human driven - rely on people to create the results lists

The element that really sets search engines apart - resulting in different search results - is the software used to build that search engine. Search engines employ different search strategies, and learning how to use a few can be beneficial

A search engine can be useful when you:

  • have a narrow or obscure topic or idea to research
  • are looking for a specific site
  • want to search the full text of millions of web pages
  • wish to retrieve a large number of documents on your topic
  • would like to search for particular types of documents, file types, source locations, languages, dates last modified, etc.

Ultimately, learning how to evaluate the information  you find will be of equal importance.

See Search Engines Showdown for more on search engines.
