Technology & Learning Magazine K-12 Tech Forum

*All materials gathered at the Forum are available and can be had/viewed in Mercy Online offices.

Karen M. White, Assistant Dean, Mercy Online, in attendance reported that: “The irony of this forum was that all industry products were geared towards the opposite of what Mr. November’s motivational speech endeavored to promote—which is all the more reason to think more conscientiously about his message.”

Key Note Speaker:

Alan November “Cultivating a World Class Work Ethic” (Alan’s next conference: Building Learning Communities 2008: Boston, July 16-18—go to

http://www.novemberlearning.com/blc for more information.

International leader in education technology, Alan believes that not only do we have excessive technology and too little vision, but that pedagogy trumps technology. Referring to K-12, he stated that we block in schools the five things kids do @home:

  • Blog
  • I-pod
  • youtube
  • video games
  • myspace
  • aim

—which are nothing but empty containers that educators should allow and fill with sound and relevant educational experiences. Alan also firmly believes that all kids should be asked to evaluate, as group experiences, no less than 10 websites per grade to increase information literacy and critical thinking skills.

Speaker Panel:

Linda Brandon, Dir. of Instruction Technology/Lakeland Central School District, NY

  • Subscribers of technology indicate the direction of best practices
  • Old technology could be archived, new is not and should be a considering factor in education at all levels

Jeffrey Branzburg, Educational Technology Consultant/Branzburg Associates, NY

  • Existential Pain...Second Life is not safe unless fully monitored in classrooms
  • Proponent of “Beyond” the Podium
  • Endorsed Chat Casting/Twitter Mediated Presentations (S5), Stream Casting (U-Stream), Video/Google/Skype, Anytime/Anywhere-WizIQ

Ryan Bretag , Coord., of Instructional Technology, Glenbrook North HS, Northbrook, IL

  • “Just Do It” = “Modeling” which is the most powerful change agent
  • All Colleges should have their own Community Blog for Faculty and each Dept. with each College should have their own divisional blogs for faculty.

Round Table Discussion:

Sue highly endorsed VHS ( Virtual High School out of Maynard, MA) and FVS ( Florida Virtual School) as best online proponents of high school completion via the internet.

Mini-Workshop

Learning with Wiki’s:

Jon Orech

Abstract (taken from: http://portal.acm.org/citation.cfm?id=1149466)

In this paper we (A. Lunde & O. Smordal) ask to what extent collective cognition can be supported and sustained in classroom practices. One major challenge for learning in technology-rich, collaborative environments is to develop design principles that balance learner exploration with a more goal directed effort. We argue that teachers play a key role in such efforts and that educational wiki designs need to allow such a role in order to support group knowing. First, from an activity theoretical perspective we discuss teaching in knowledge collectives as new type of educational activity. Next, we analyze functions and meta level affordances found in the MediaWiki application. This is followed by a presentation of an intervention study in which the MediaWiki was used by a class of Upper Secondary School learners in Norway. Findings are used to discuss design principles for wikis that support collective cognition and where there is a place for the teacher.

Opportunities in Criminal Justice

"In this climate, it is clear that the criminal justice field is fraught with employment opportunities, and a college degree in criminal justice can give you a distinct advantage. Criminal justice — the study of procedures and agencies established to manage both crime and the people accused of violating the law — has become one of the most popular undergraduate majors in the United States."

"The Growth and Value of Mercy Online"

Universal Design for Online Courses

Over 2.6 million university students are currently taking courses online. Both rapid growth of online education and the application of Section 508 to these courses have prompted universities to assure accessibility of courses to all students. Universal Design for Learning is a concept adapted from architecture and construction that focuses on accessibility. Principles of UDL make learning more accessible to all learners through flexible methods of presentation, expression and engagement. When we apply this concept to online teaching, instructors improve access for persons with disabilities that occur most frequently in university populations.

Mercy Online sponsored a live, Interactive Web Seminar for:
