Mercy's women's basketball program has a long and storied history as one of the first such programs in the northeast. In the past, the team has won the right to appear in the NCAA National Tournament and has been very successful on the court.

They have remained a highly competitive program in the NYCAC, which was the first conference sport to carry an automatic bid to the NCAA Division II National Championship Tournament for its conference champion.
