Last season was the first in the rebuilding process for new Head Coach Joe Keelin, and it was one he'd certainly not want to dwell on. With the departure of both of the team's point guards at the holiday break, the Lady Flyers were susceptible to other teams' pressure and struggled through a winless campaign.
The campaign was not without its bright spots, however. Four of last year's starters will be returning for their senior year, led by top scorer Elissa Krossber (15.0 ppg, 6.3 rpg) who was a 2005-06 NYCAC Pre-season Second Team All-Conference selection. Joining Krossber is rebounding standout Markeisha Wigent (12.0 ppg, 10/7 rpg), who finished last season second in the conference in rebounds. Nicole Steinburg (6.3 ppg) and Christine Hafner (4.0 ppg), join reserves Kristen Fennessy, Erika Green, and Davilla Moore on the roster.
With a clear view of his needs in sight, Coach Keelin recruited aggressively this season and made some key additions. Freshman Christina Baxter (Greenwood Lake, NY/George F. Baker HS) is expected to bring her spirited play to the point guard position. Tannyka Bent (Queens, NY/Bayside HS), and Kathrin Healy (Kingston, NY/Onteora HS) are also expected to contribute, though Healy's status is now questionable due to a pre-season injury.
Senior Kathleen Mulcahy (Larchmont, NY/Mamaroneck HS), and Chioma Egbuchunam (Lagos, Nigeria/American School, England) will see their first varsity hoops action after participating on Mercy's women's soccer team, and Ayanna Collazo (Yonkers, NY/Yonkers HS) and Rhona Hall (Mount Vernon, NY/Monroe HS) will also provide support, pending determination of eligibility.
This year's schedule features the usual slate of highly-competitive New York Collegiate Athletic Conference foes, in addition to a non-conference trip to participate in the Shippensburg Tournament and local tilts with the likes of Felician College and Dominican College.
