Department of Special Education & Specialized Programs

The Department of Special Education works with candidates preparing for special education licensure through our advanced certificate program.  The program offers candidates the opportunity for dual certification or tri-certification in the following areas:

  • Early Childhood Education, Birth-Grade 2 and Students with Disabilities
  • Early Childhood Education, Birth-Grade 2 and Childhood Education, Grades 1-6 and Students with Disabilities (tri-certification program)
  • Childhood Education, Grades 1-6 and Students with Disabilities
  • Adolescent Education, Grades 7-12, and Students with Disabilities

Candidates can also enter the special education program as non-degree teacher certification candidates.  This option is for candidates who are already certified teachers and possess a Master of Science degree in another area and are seeking an extension to their certification in the area of special education.

In the Department of Special Education, candidates learn about the diverse needs of students with disabilities and how to provide effective, evidence based instruction, incorporating inclusionary practices, differentiation, and individualization.   The program provides candidates with the knowledge and skills necessary to work with a wide range of students in a variety of settings to make a meaningful difference.
