The field of Special Education demands teachers who are not only knowledgeable and skillful, but those who demonstrate great patience, care and understanding. As the number of students requiring special education services increases, the need for special education teachers continues to grow.
The program leads either to initial or professional certification in three areas: two in special education an one in early childhood education. Professional certification requires an initial certificate and three years of classroom experience.
Students are prepared to become teachers in early childhood classrooms (eg., kindergarten or preschool classrooms), as well as special education settings, birth through grade six.
*Please note, New York State requires that all students applying to graduate Schools of Education must take an admission test. Mercy College requires that students take the GRE or Praxis unless applying for the non-certification (Educational Studies) option.
