Jason Choi

Public Schools of the Tarrytowns

Jason serves as the Science Department Chair for the Sleepy Hollow Middle and High Schools.  In addition, he teaches both AP and regents chemistry at the High School.  His involvement in the Inquiry-based learning program with Pace University and his involvement in the Research Experience for Teachers at Columbia University has had significant impact on his teaching. This past year he participated in the Hudson Valley STEM Fellowship and completed a two-week summer research program at Regeneron laboratories on hemostasis. Aside from academics, Jason serves as the JV Volleyball Coach and Varsity Golf Coach.  He also teaches a SAT mathematics prep course.  Jason earned his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1993 and his Master’s in Education from Teachers College, Columbia University.  He earned a second Master’s in Educational Leadership from Bank Street College.

Erika Sprauer

East Ramapo Central School District

Erika Sprauer completed her GNY Wipro Science Fellowship in 2016. She has been a science teacher at Pomona Middle School for the past 13 years. She has also been the Science Chairperson at Pomona Middle School and Instructional Supervisor of Middle School Science for the East Ramapo Central School District. She co-taught a summer course in the Science Behind Science 21 through the Teachers Center. She developed a unit plan that was selected as a state finalist in the Samsung Solver for Tomorrow competition. When she is not teaching, she enjoys being the mother of 3 beautiful daughters, 2 adorable wirehair fox terriers, and one very fluffy orange cat.

Marselle Heywood

City School District of New Rochelle

With more than 28 years of experience in Science Education, Ms. Heywood currently serves as Science Department Chairperson for the City School District of New Rochelle Secondary Schools.   Ms. Heywood previously served as Science Coordinator and Director of Mathematics and Science for Community School District Six in New York City.

Carmen King

White Plains Public Schools

Carmen King completed her GNY Wipro Science Education Fellowship in 2016. Carmen received her Bachelor’s from Cornell and her Master’s from Columbia University. As an outgrowth of her work in the classroom she has created and implemented curriculums with literacy as a focus for her district, White Plains. She has spearheaded many education-related projects, leading studies of poetry performance, guiding students through explorations of marine biology, and using photography as a medium to inspire the written word. She currently teaches 5th grade. Among the highlights of her 25-year professional career have been serving as a mentor for the White Plains School District and Sarah Lawrence College. In addition, Carmen is a wife, a mother, and a poetry aficionado.

Karla Purcell

Port Chester Public Schools

Karla Purcell completed her GNY Wipro Science Education Fellowship in 2016 and has partnered with Mercy College to bring the FLORES program (family science education nights - see webpage) to her elementary school families.   She teaches 4th grade at John F. Kennedy Magnet School in Port Chester, NY. Karla received her Bachelor of Science in Education from St. John’s University in New York and her Master of Science in Education from the University of Bridgeport, CT. Karla has been teaching at John F. Kennedy since 2001 in grades 1, 2 and 4. She also spent one year teaching a hands-on science lab program at JFK to grades 1 through 5. Karla and two of her 4th grade colleagues have developed and teach an after-school garden program for grades 3 and 4 that incorporates science, literacy, nutrition, food citizenship, and digital literacy, as well as community outreach.

Andrea Coddett (2014-2016)

East Ramapo Central School District

Dr. Andrea Coddett is the Assistant Superintendent for Instruction K-12 for the East Ramapo Central School District, an urban-suburban district of 9,000 public school students in Rockland County.  Dr. Coddett began her career as a Special Education teacher after which she became a building-level Math Specialist.  In her administrative career, Dr. Coddett has worked as a District Math Specialist, an Early Childhood Principal, a K-5 principal, and Director of Secondary Special Education. Dr. Coddett is a graduate of Fordham University where she earned a doctorate in Executive Leadership. She holds Master’s Degrees in Curriculum and Instruction with a Reading specialization and Educational Administration from Pace University and a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Mercy College. Dr. Coddett has lived in and attended schools in four different countries on three continents and considers herself a true global citizen. As a learning leader and life-long learner, Dr. Coddett’s personal motto is, “Empowered for Learning, Empowered for Life.”

Leana Peltier

Public Schools of the Tarrytowns

Leana Peltier completed her GNY Wipro Science Education Fellowship in 2016. She is a Biology teacher at Sleepy Hollow High School in Sleepy Hollow, NY, where she teaches AP Biology and Living Environment.  Leana is currently completing her 17th year of teaching. She has a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a Master of Science in Health Education.    Leana enjoys sharing with her colleagues new teaching methods, strategies and activities she has learned after attending conferences, workshops and participating in initiatives and staff development days.  She has enjoyed coaching competitive volleyball on the high school, state and national level and her favorite hobby is rock climbing.

Karen Lent

East Ramapo Central School District

Karen Lent completed her GNY Wipro Science Education Fellowship in 2016. She started her elementary teaching career in 1997 at P.S. 41, Bronx, NY, teaching 4th Grade students. Since 2001 she has taught 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th Grade students in East Ramapo. She has planned curriculum for multiple grade levels, and supervised teachers and students in need of academic intervention during Saturday academies and before and after school programs. She has a BA in English Literature from Fordham University, and pursued an alternate route to NY State Certification through SUNY New Paltz. She also earned an MS in Special Education from the City College of NY. One of Karen’s great joys in life is gardening.

Peggy Younger

City School District of New Rochelle

Peggy Younger is a high school teacher with the City of New Rochelle School District.  Peggy received a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. She began her career in education at the elementary level with the New York City Department of Education.  She went on to complete a Master of Science in Elementary Education at Mercy College and an Advanced Graduate Certificate in Educational Administration at Stony Brook University.  She is currently teaching courses in Living Environment and SUPA Forensic Science.  She believes that science is the perfect avenue for the experiential and inquiry based learning that she favors and is excited to be working with the WIPRO fellowship.

Vincent Dougherty

White Plains Public Schools

Vincent Dougherty completed his GNY Wipro Science Education Fellowship in 2016. He holds B.S., M.S. and M.B.A. degrees from Iona College. He has been teaching for 33 years and has spent the past 27 years as a Chemistry teacher at White Plains High School teaching all levels of Chemistry. In the summer he teaches Biology as part of the Summer School Program. In the past few years, Vincent has incorporated technology into the classroom by using wireless tablets, e-clickers, and document cameras. These tools have allowed him to create lessons which help students better understand difficult abstract concepts.

Elsy Gonzalez (2014-2016)

Elsy Gonzalez has been a teacher in the Port Chester-Rye UFSD for fifteen years.  She has taught 5th , 3rd and 1st grades.  Elsy is in her third year of transition from the classroom to administration through an Administrative Internship Program.  She is the Elementary Science Committee Facilitator for the Port Chester School District, and is honored to be coordinating the Science Fellowship Program.
