About the Center

The Center for Global Engagement develops transformative, internationally-oriented programming for the Mercy community —through on-campus events, UN-related activities, study abroad, and faculty scholarship—and so facilitates exchange of knowledge across boundaries. Through interdisciplinary and experiential global learning opportunities, Mercy students engage in learning that builds diversity of perspectives and cultural understanding.

The Center's Mission

The mission of the center is to identify, develop and provide transformative and dynamic global learning opportunities for students, faculty and staff. The Center builds on the mission of Mercy College and further supports the establishment of a wide range of initiatives, in the United States and abroad, to facilitate the exchange of knowledge across international boundaries. Through interdisciplinary and experiential global learning opportunities, students are able to engage in learning about cultural perspectives different from their own.

Globalization at Mercy

Mercy College prepares for globalization challenges. At Mercy we encourage the exploration of critical issues while presenting opportunities for students to take action as global citizens. As the world becomes more integrated, Mercy College is committed to an international approach to teaching, learning and engaging with our communities. The College sees global and local settings as intertwined. Looking beyond the classroom, the College offers experiential learning and community based work that focuses on international aspects. A Mercy College education incorporates international perspectives and allows students to see their potential roles in a global economy.

Impact of Globalization

The impact of globalization. Globalization is not a new phenomenon, however, the current speed in development of information technology has made globalization an unstoppable force. Its impact has never been more apparent. Rapid international changes and integration, in the economy, society and technology, have all brought globalization to the forefront. Educational institutions need to assume responsibility for providing students with the necessary awareness and critical ability to work in and with new and global perspectives.

Challenges of Globalization

The nation and the challenges of globalization. America faces a challenge with the complexity associated with navigating evolving global environments. As a country we face questions about: who works where, for whom, at what pay, with what source and destination for products and services. These questions present both opportunities and challenges to leadership. Knowledge about the world - and about the role that America could and should play in the world is becoming increasingly essential. Education about globalization and the international landscape is critical for today's students, who will require a rich understanding of the world beyond the United States in order to succeed after graduation.
