Mercy College Dean Joan Toglia Co-Authors New Book on Cognitive Rehabilitation

Mercy College’s Joan Toglia, Ph.D. — Dean of Mercy’s School of Health and Natural Sciences and Professor of Occupational Therapy — co-authored a book entitled “The Multicontext Approach to Cognitive Rehabilitation: A Metacognitive Strategy Intervention to Optimize Functional Cognition.” Published by Gatekeeper Press in April 2021, the book provides practical information, tools and resources for implementation of the Multicontext Approach in cognitive rehabilitation — an approach that is uniquely designed to maximize functional outcomes for people with cognitive impairments due to acquired brain injury and other health conditions.

Toglia is recognized both nationally and internationally as a leader in the rehabilitation of people with cognitive and perceptual deficits as a results of acquired brain injury or neurological conditions. She has presented over 300 workshops and lectures across the world and authored or co-authored over 80 publications on cognitive rehabilitation. In 2013, she was named a Fellow of the American Occupational Therapy Association in recognition of her contributions to cognitive rehabilitation theory and practice. In addition to her roles at Mercy College, she serves as Adjunct Clinical Professor of Cognitive Science in Rehabilitation Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College.

Toglia’s co-author, Erin R. Foster, Ph.D., is Assistant Professor in Occupational Therapy, Neurology and Psychiatry at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri. She is recognized both nationally and internationally for her work in functional cognition and Parkinson’s disease.
