June 17, 2015

Dear Members of the Mercy College Community,

On June 3, I had the pleasure of participating in the Mercy College Commencement Exercises for Hudson Link for Higher Education, the education and support program at Sing Sing Correctional Facility.  The class of 2015 is comprised of 22 men who earned their Bachelor of Science and Associate of Science degrees and who all completed the same requirements demanded of other Mercy College graduates this year.  Chairman emeritus of the NAACP, Julian Bond, singer and activist Harry Belafonte, and actress Debra Winger were among the distinguished guests at the ceremony. I’d like to share this article from The Wall Street Journal which highlights the value of prisoner education and the important role it plays in the rehabilitation of inmates.

Mercy College is proud to continue a 40 year partnership providing education in correctional facilities. The prison education program has produced extraordinarily positive results in the rehabilitation process.  According to Hudson Link Executive Director Sean Pica, the recidivism rate among those who have completed the prison education program is one percent, compared to 42 percent for New York State’s overall inmate population.  It is truly remarkable to look into the faces of men who have seized the opportunity to transform the course of their lives by earning a college degree.  I thank the Mercy faculty and staff who have dedicated their time and passion to the Hudson Link program.

Sincerely,

Tim Hall
