Mercy Business Students Present Investment Research to Trust Company of the West

“One of the key principles of the School of Business program is bridging classroom instruction with real world experience” said Chuck Garcia, Director of the Honors Program. As has been our custom these past 4 years, Dr. Ed Weis’ freshman honors finance class were required to present stock recommendations to a group of investment experts at TCW, a leading investment advisor with approximately $194 billions of assets under management. On the panel were a variety of equity analysts who critiqued the presentations on the quality of their analysis, content, and style.

For the afternoon, there were multiple presentations. Students presented in pairs their specific stock recommendation. They then offered the background, analysis, and justification to support either a buy or sell recommendation. Companies analyzed included McDonalds, Starbucks, Nike, and many more companies who comprise the Standard & Poor’s 500 index.

“It was an exciting yet nerve wracking event for the students” said Weis, who is also the Dean of the School of Business. “The students did a remarkable job of distilling several months of analysis into 10-minute presentations, and engaged in active dialogue with seasoned veterans who have been professional investors for decades.

We’re grateful to our friends at TCW for their time and expertise and look forward to next year’s event.”
