Mercy College is an official site for the Internal Revenue Service’s (IRS) Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program. The IRS VITA Program provides free tax preparation service to tax filers in financial need and who have income levels below certain thresholds as established by the IRS.

Qualifying tax filers will now be able to come to Mercy College at the Bronx Campus starting February 3 and Dobbs Ferry Campus starting February 4, to have their tax returns prepared free of charge under this Program.

In the past, Mercy College has participated solely as a training facility for the VITA Program, where accounting and business students (both undergraduate and graduate) have been trained to become certified tax preparers under the Program. Subsequent to their training and certification, students then served at various VITA sites throughout Westchester County under the supervision of experienced site coordinators. This year, students are training once again, but after becoming certified will be able to serve as volunteer tax preparers at the Mercy College sites at the Bronx and Dobbs Ferry Campuses.

“The IRS VITA Program provides tremendous benefit to the community, offering free tax preparation services for low- to moderate-income individuals and families.  Trained and IRS VITA-certified Mercy College students, supervised by experienced faculty and alumni practitioners, prepare these tax returns on a volunteer basis,” said Associate Professor of Accounting Denise Stefano. “This provides a valuable active learning environment for students, while engaging those students in giving back to the community through their volunteerism.”

To make an appointment at either the Bronx or Dobbs Ferry Campus locations, dial 1-800-899-1479, or 211 if you’re calling from within Westchester County. Select menu option 6 to reach the tax assistance personnel and let them know you are looking to schedule an appointment for free tax preparation at Mercy College under the VITA Program. Make sure to let them know which campus location you’d like for your appointment. You will be screened for income eligibility, and you will be advised of the next steps to take.
