Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. – May 29, 2013– Dressed in suits and ties, 21 members of the Mercy College men’s Lacrosse team toured the New York Stock Exchange and got a first had look at the traders in action. The players and their coaches were treated to breakfast at 11 Wall Street and then got to explore the trading floor before watching the opening bell. After the ringing of the bell the players were given a tour of the building that included a history of the stock exchange and details on how the trading system works.

The players got to spend time with Chief Executive Officer of NYSE Euronext Inc. Duncan L. Niederauer and NYSE managing director James J. Maguire. The players were invited to the NYSE by Niederauer who also recently joined the players for practice.

Mercy College Senior and team goalie T.J. DiCarlo says his favorite part was watching the action that ensued after the opening bell, “When the bell went off the vibe went from laid-back to wild. It was so exciting” said DiCarlo, who is studying mathematics at Mercy College. DiCarlo says he learned a lot about stocks and is now considering being a stock broker.

Mercy College Chief Student & Alumni Engagement Officer, Dr. William E. Martinov, Jr. says, “It was a wonderful opportunity for our students. Seeing the floor of the exchange and meeting influential leaders who took the time to explain the stock market to them is something the students will always remember. It was a moment when the classroom lessons came to life, a career related opportunity that Mercy College will continue to provide for our aspiring students. Thank you again to Duncan Niederauer for this fabulous opportunity.”

Though only few of the students that attended the trip are finance majors, many agreed they are now considering a career in finance.
