Recently the editors of Outside Online/Science of Performance, an Outside Magazine blog, asked the provocative question, “Are endurance athletes more susceptible to diabetes?”

For scholarly answers, they turned to Patrick Davitt, assistant professor of exercise science at Mercy College. “Although the rising prevalence of Type 2 diabetes can be traced to a variety of causes,” said Davitt, “many experts are beginning to pay attention to the high sugar content of sports drinks consumed by many endurance athletes.”

Davitt was among several academics and performance athletes quoted in the article, which appeared in the August 8 issue of Outside Online.
