The Mercy College Center for STEM Education, led by Drs. Meghan Marrero and Amanda Gunning, hosted the Greater New York Wipro Science Education Fellowship Conference in the Dobbs Ferry Campus Rotunda, celebrating the culmination of the two-year fellowship of Cohort 3 and five Years of Wipro Science Education Fellowship (SEF) at Mercy College. In all, Mercy and Wipro worked with 60 experienced science teachers in this fellowship in five districts: Tarrytown, New Rochelle, White Plains, Port Chester and East Ramapo.

The conference began with presentations by fellows who have received Wipro Phase 2 mini-grants for science leadership projects in their home districts. Two fellows, Duane Stilwell and Alexandra Danz, were also selected to present at the University College of Teacher Education Conference in Austria at the end of May.

Dr. Arthur Eisenkraft, director of the Center of Science and Math in Context at UMB, congratulated all three cohorts of Wipro fellows for “moving the 20 percent” that gave them a new direction in their thinking about science and teacher leadership.  Santosh Karagada, representing Wipro Limited, which funds the fellowship and mini-grants, was thrilled to see up close the concrete results of science research that Cohort 3 has undertaken.

Dr. Rose Rudnitski, dean of the School of Education and partial sponsor of the event, welcomed three collaborating teachers from the National College of Ireland. Dr. Leo Casey of NCI presented awards to Drs. Marrero and Gunning for their contributions to science education at Mercy. Dr. Marrero will be doing a Fulbright Scholarship with the National College of Ireland this fall.

Cohort 3 received their Wipro pins for completing their fellowship and presented their research in a Poster Session. Also attending were their Wipro Mentors from the School of Education.
