Mercy College Assistant Professor Marjorie G. Jones

Dobbs Ferry, NY - Mercy College Assistant Professor Marjorie G. Jones announced that her recently completed book, Frances Yates and the Hermetic Tradition, is available for preorder online at Amazon.com and BarnesandNoble.com. The biography, which took roughly 10 years to write and will be released by Ibis Press in June, explores the remarkable life of British historian Frances Yates (1899-1981), author of such acclaimed works as Giordano Bruno and the Hermetic Tradition and The Art of Memory. Jones, who teaches historiography and European and women's history courses at Mercy, wrote the book in an effort to recapture the intellectual and spiritual worldview of an outstanding woman historian.

"This first biography of British historian Frances Yates tells us a great deal about intellectual life of postwar Europe, as well as the longstanding tradition of independent women scholars," said Jones, who has been teaching at Mercy for 15 years. "Yates was a pioneering scholar who transformed Renaissance historiography with the publication in 1964 of her great book Giordano Bruno and the Hermetic Tradition."

Jones, a graduate of Wheaton College in Massachusetts and the Rutgers School of Law, returned to school in the 1990s after 25 years in law and finance to earn a master's degree in historical studies from The New School in New York City. While there, she wrote her thesis on the early unpublished writings of Yates, whose work and unique historical perspective influenced Jones' decision to return to school. As part of her research for the book, Jones traveled to London several times over the past 10 years to collect information from the Warburg Institute, where Yates' papers are housed. Currently Jones is working on a biography of Mary Vaux Walcott (1860-1940), whose famous botanical prints she first came upon in the Mercy College library several years ago.
