Message from the Dean

A message from the Dean of Social and Behavioral Sciences, Karol Dean.

Mahoney Hall

The School of Social and Behavioral Sciences seeks to foster caring in our global community. Through learning to treat one person at a time, helping individuals and families better manage every day issues, or working in a large organization, Mercy College teaches students how to become an integral part of their world.

Mediation Training
Congratulations to the IMCR Class of 2018!

We are so proud of the Mercy College students who just completed the Mediation Training conducted by Dr. Stephen Slate, Executive Director of the IMCR (Institute for Mediation and Conflict Resolution).

We are in our 18th year of training students to be mediators and still going strong.  Students in the program have the opportunity to develop their negotiation, mediation and facilitation skills.

Mercy Students Attend A Court of Appeals Session
Mercy Students Attend A Court of Appeals Session

On Thursday, April 27th, students in the Legal Studies program were invited to hear oral arguments before the New York State Court of Appeals held at the Westchester County Courthouse.  The Court of Appeals sits in Albany, NY and, generally, arguments are heard in Albany. This was a rare opportunity for students to observe oral arguments (in 3 cases) before the State's highest court.

Prior to attending, students from PACE Law School met with students in the Legal Studies classes to discuss the cases they would be hearing.  This was truly an exceptional opportunity for our students and an amazing learning experience.  The students were also able to meet with the judges after court adjourned and a Q&A session with the judges followed.

Students were accompanied by Dr. Diana Juettner, Chair, Social Sciences, Dr. Donna Drumm, Adjunct Professor, Legal Studies, and Dr. Donna Bookin, J.D., Assistant Professor and Program Director, Legal Studies.
