Frequently Asked Questions

General Pantry Operation

Q: What is the Mav Market?

A: The Mav Market is a food and resource pantry available to all students, faculty, and staff. We are a resource for you to obtain food, toiletries, recipes, and other health and wellness resources. We are community-oriented and look to serve you as best as possible to help promote academic, personal, and professional success!

Q: How does the Mav Market work?

A: Stop by the Mav Market during open hours at either location, complete a 2-minute intake form*, find out how many points you have, then take what you need.

*If you have completed the intake form, please remember to bring your Mav Market ID card and reusable bag to the next session to get checked in.

Q: How many times can I visit the Mav Market per month?

A: You are allowed to visit as many times as the Mav Market is open.

Q: How many times can I use the Emergency Request Form?

A: You are allowed to use the Emergency Request Form as many times as you need. Find it here. Please be aware that we will fill the bag with enough items for five meals.

Q: How much am I allowed to take?

A: When you register to become a member of the Mav Market, you are given a certain number of points based on how many people you are picking up for. We try to provide at least 5 meals per person.

Q: What is the point system?

A: The point system is a way for us to make sure our members are able to obtain the amount of items they need while being conscious of people who come later in the day. The number of points you receive is based on how many people you are picking up for (family size). You are assigned how many points you have once you register with the Mav Market.*

*Note: These points can change based on adjustments to family size.

Q: What happens if I run out of points at one session? Will I still be able to pick up next week?

A: Your points re-start at every open pantry session, so use up those points!

Q: Do I need to pay for items from the Mav Market?

A: No! The Mav Market is completely free and open to all students, faculty, and staff.

Q: I'm not experiencing food insecurity or hunger, can I still pick up some snacks from the Mav Market?

A: Of course! If you are hungry throughout the day, we are here to help. A granola bar could be the difference between a B and an A, and we want to make sure you have all the tools you need to succeed.

Q: I'm graduating from Mercy, but I still need help. Can I come to the Mav Market?

A: You are allowed to return to the Mav Market for after graduating! However, please let us know so we can help you find the appropriate resources, including food pantries in your area, how to apply for SNAP/EBT and WIC, and any other needs you may have. Check out our outside resources page for resources to check out.

Volunteer

Q: Can I volunteer with the Mav Market?

A: Yes! Fill out this form to get started!

Q: What would I do as a volunteer?

A: Volunteers perform a wide variety of tasks, including checking members in, inventory, stocking shelves, picking up donations, social media, planning fundraisers, and much more! Whatever your interests are, we have something for you to do.

Q: Can I design a project for the Mav Market for academic credit?

A: Absolutely, the Mav Market encourages students to participate in a way that is meaningful for them. We will gladly work with you and your professor to design a project that enriches your perspective and helps the Mav Market.

Donations

Q: Can I donate to the Mav Market?

A: Yes, feel free to donate items at the Mav Market locations in the Bronx, Dobbs Ferry, or Manhatta, or place items in our drop boxes located on all campuses. You can also donate through our Amazon Wishlist or support us through our everydayhero account by making a financial contribution to the Mav Market Fund!

Q: What kind of items are you looking for?

A: We accept all non-perishable food items, toiletries, and menstrual products. We are in highest need of on-the-go meals, soups, pasta, sauce, beans, canned fruits, and snacks.

We are also in high need of kitchen supplies, such as pots & pans, can openers, utensils, and on-the-go containers.

Q: I have some perishable items or produce that I'd like to donate. Is there a way to do that?

A: Please contact Mary Sherman to arrange a time to drop off your donation so we can get it into the fridge. We want to ensure the highest level of food safety for our members, which means ensuring all products are stored in the proper conditions.

Q: Do you accept frozen foods?

A: Yes!

Q: I have items that are past the sell-by or use-by date. Can I still donate them?

A: Yes! Our volunteers have been trained to determine the quality of products. We sort through all donations to ensure all of our products are safe for consumption, so you can donate with confidence.
