Program Requirements
To participate in the program, participants must be employed within the NYC Schools district and secure nomination by their principal and/or school district administration. CR-ITI-ESOL Participants will complete the following courses:
EDUC 504 Cultural Perspectives and the Teaching-Learning Process
EDUC 505 Teaching English as a Second Language
EDUC 636 Methods and Materials of Teaching English as a Second Language through the Content Areas PreK-12
EDUC 629 Modern English Structure and the Teaching of English
EDUC 707 Mentoring Seminar in TESOL
Additional requirements, which may be completed before or during the program
| Twelve credit hours of college level coursework in a language other than English or equivalent College Level Examination Program (CLEP) credits

| Achieve a passing score on New York State Teacher Certification Examination: Content Specialty Test (CST) – English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
|
| Completion of New York State-mandated workshops: Recognition and Reporting of Child Abuse, Prevention of School Violence, and Dignity for all Students Act (DASA)

Participants will be required to attend an orientation session on the Mercy College Bronx Campus located at Metro-Hutchinson Center, 1200 Waters Place, Bronx, NY. On-campus classes will also meet at the Bronx campus. There will be monthly meetings with the participants and mentors both in Spring and Fall.
*Successful completion of this program means that participants complete the five required courses, attend the required meetings, and obtain certification in ESOL.
*Participants who drop-out of the program or who complete the required coursework, but fail to obtain certification will neither be eligible for a stipend, nor will they be reimbursed for the costs they have incurred.
