Sabbatical Studies Program

Build your skills with Mercy's Sabbatical Studies Program. If you are a licensed teacher in New York State and eligible for sabbatical, Mercy has created a program designed to meet UFT requirements during sabbatical leave and help you to take your skills to the next level.

Beginning in Fall 2025, Sabbatical Studies students will take coursework through our partner, Teacher Education Institute (TEI). These Graduate-level courses are online, asynchronous, and approved for Mercy University graduate credit.

You will take the courses online through Teacher Education Institute (TEI).

Yes these courses are online with an Asynchronous format. You will receive weekly assignments, which you can work on during the typical school day hours.

No, you do not need to submit an application to Mercy University. When you register for the TEI Courses at a later date, you will fill out a Mercy-specific form that TEI will send you. That form will register you as a “non-matriculated” student with Mercy University. This information will then be used to generate a Mercy Student ID number and a Mercy Transcript for you upon completion of the coursework.

Since you are essentially taking courses as a non-matriculated student, you will not receive any formal “acceptance letter” from Mercy nor TEI into the program/courses. If you require additional documentation in lieu of an acceptance letter to submit to your Sabbatical application with UFT, please contact Sarah Martinez for assistance at smartinez75@mercy.edu.

There is no waitlist for 2025-2026. If you are interested in these courses, you will be able to take them.

Courses are Asynchronous and will run even if only 1 student is registered. Therefore, they will not be canceled.
