Charles Lieberman earned a Ph.D. in Criminal Justice from the Graduate Center, City University of New York. Dr. Lieberman joined Mercy's Criminal Justice faculty in 2021 and currently serves as Criminal Justice Program Director and co-Director for the Center for Social & Criminal Justice. His ongoing research, which often involves collaboration with academic and practitioner partners, includes topics relating to criminal investigations, counterterrorism, and police professionalism, training, policy, and reform. He has authored or co-authored numerous books, book chapters, and articles on a wide variety of topics. Prior to entering academia, he served as a member of the New York City Police Department (NYPD) in a variety of assignments, with a focus on criminal investigations. While pursuing his doctorate, he accepted an offer to serve as an instructor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. After completing his doctorate, Dr. Lieberman accepted a position as a tenure-track, full-time, Assistant Professor and also served as the Director of the Graduate Program in National Security & Public Safety at the University of New Haven (UNH). In 2011, he was reinstated to the NYPD, where he worked for the Office of the Deputy Commissioner of Training’s Special Projects Unit, where he conducted research on a variety of police related policies and strategies in promotion of the goals of the NYPD, co-authored reports, and administered assessments and evaluations. After retiring from the NYPD again, he served as the Director of Policy and Research for the New York City Councilmember of District 11. In 2018, he returned to UNH as a Visiting Professor. In his current role at Mercy, Dr. Lieberman's goal is to facilitate the academic and professional success of all Mercy students. Many of his former students have successfully transitioned into justice-related professions, including appointments in local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, and graduate programs, including law school and doctoral programs.
