I have been teaching at Mercy University since 2002 where I teach in the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program. My main teaching responsibilities include courses in Research Methods.  I also coordinate student research projects and the Case Study Clinical Problem Solving course. My research interests are in occupational injury epidemiology and rehabilitation outcomes.

MS, Physical Therapy, Columbia University
MS, Quantitative Methods (Theory and Methods), CUNY Graduate Center
MS, Ergonomics and Biomechanics, NYU
PhD, Environmental Health Science (Biomechanics), NYU

I am currently involved in several research projects.  These include:

  • Health Literacy and Vaccine Hesitancy in Underserved Areas
  • We have partnered with the Westchester County Department of Health on a $3.76 million, two-year grant by the Department of Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health to reduce health disparities, improve vaccination rates and increase health literacy in underserved areas in Westchester County.
  • Rehabilitation Outcomes for Patients with Stroke
  • Working with the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at Cornell University Medical Center, I am part of a multi-disciplinary team that does research on outcomes for individuals with stroke in acute rehabilitation.
  • Prevention of Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders in Physical Therapists
  • Throughout my research career, I have studied the epidemiology, impact, and prevention of work- related injuries in physical therapists.  I have authored over 15 related publications and continue to examine ways to prevent therapists from getting injured at work.  My current focus is on the prevention of wrist and hand pain in manual therapists.

My teaching focus is on rehabilitation research methods.   Through a 3-course sequence, we teach our students to become educated consumers of the research literature and develop the skills needed to become entry-level clinical researchers.   All courses include content on basic biostatistics and quantitative methods, including SPSS.   These skills are necessary to practice in the current environment.   Although not every student has primary research interest, the content is taught in an accessible manner.  We aim to keep the topic clinically relevant, engaging, and even fun!

All students have the opportunity to participate in an ongoing research project.  These include faculty research projects and projects in the community with external researchers.   The project occurs in the 2nd and 3rd years of the program and ties together all of the content learned in the research sequence.
