Mavericks Making a Difference: CNR Alumna Limits COVID-19 Spread in Westchester County Containment Zone

College of New Rochelle (CNR) alumna Caitlin Doyle-Goldsmith ‘15, a public health nurse for the Westchester County Department of Health, provides care under the department’s clinical division, which operates free immunization, tuberculosis and sexual health clinics. Trained in protocol to address infectious disease, Doyle-Goldsmith has on-the-ground experience mitigating community outbreaks.

That is why when the first coronavirus patient and subsequent cases were identified in Westchester County, Doyle-Goldsmith was first at the scene, providing testing and health education for the community members involved. Her participation in Westchester County’s first contact investigation is further described on a March 15 CBS News 60 Minutes segment.

While the rate of coronavirus (COVID-19) infection is increasing, Doyle-Goldsmith remains focused and steadfast in her commitment to limit the spread of the virus. An essential worker equipped to deal with a public health emergency, the prospect of making a difference keeps her motivated during this difficult time.

As a nursing student at CNR, Doyle-Goldsmith most enjoyed her public health class, where she learned holistic approaches to ensuring the health of communities. She values the lectures and clinical placements at CNR, and her senior rotation led to her first job as a nurse after graduation. She is grateful to implement learned skills and perspectives as a public health nurse, providing essential services for individuals who may experience barriers accessing health care.
