Mercy University announced that Matt Kilcullen, assistant vice president of Athletics, will retire effective June 30, 2026, concluding a 12-year tenure marked by sustained competitive success, academic excellence and a strong commitment to community engagement.

During his leadership, Mercy University Athletics experienced one of the most successful periods in its history. The Mavericks captured 16 East Coast Conference (ECC) championships and earned 25 NCAA Tournament appearances across multiple programs. Notably, Men’s Lacrosse became the first team in university history to advance to the National Championship Game in 2022, while Women’s Soccer reached the NCAA Final Four in 2017. Under Kilcullen’s guidance, Mercy Athletics programs elevated their standing at both the conference and national levels, while maintaining a clear focus on the student-athlete experience. The Mavericks posted a cumulative grade-point average above 3.0 for 24 consecutive semesters, including a 3.57 GPA in fall 2025, and received numerous conference and national academic honors. These results reflected an athletics culture that prioritized excellence in the classroom alongside competitive performance.

Kilcullen also emphasized community engagement as a core value of Mercy University Athletics. Student-athletes emerged as leaders in service, placing Mercy among Division II’s top programs in community involvement and earning multiple ECC Community Cup recognitions.

His accomplishments and commitment to holistic student-athlete development were recognized nationally when he was named the 2022–23 NACDA Athletic Director of the Year.

“On behalf of the University, I thank Matt for his exceptional leadership, vision and service,” said Susan L. Parish, MSW, PhD, president of Mercy University.
