Mercy College Professor Abby Hirsch has received the 2019 Career Achievement Award from the New York State School Counselor Association (NYSSCA), an organization that supports the work of school counselors throughout the state through professional development and advocacy.

The award is presented to an individual who has made a significant impact in the school counselor profession over the course of their career and has given back to the greater community. From volunteering with a Yonkers, NY college access organization that supports first-generation college students, to educating the next generation of school counselors, Hirsch exemplifies the necessary qualities to receive this coveted award.

“It’s moving to be recognized by my peers and honored by an association for my career and community involvement. The award is the wonderful culmination of a career I have loved, and the work with an organization I have cherished,” Hirsch said.

Hirsch is a past president of NYSSCA and has been a dedicated board member of the association for several years. She gets immense joy from teaching in Mercy’s School of Social and Behavioral Sciences and appreciates the opportunity to train new counselors entering a profession that is so valuable. She has worked at Mercy for about 20 years and has since seen her former students gain employment at numerous schools throughout Westchester, Rockland and the Bronx.
