Dr. Ben Abelson is a New York City native who received his B.A. from Hunter College, where he taught as an adjunct for several years, and his Ph.D. in Philosophy (2015) from the City University of New York Graduate Center. His dissertation was an analysis of the concept of a person, in which he defines a person as a being that jointly possesses the capacities for self-consciousness and concern. Ben's primamry research interests are personal identity, the nature of responsibility, the foundations of psychology and psychotherapy, the influence of emotions on behavior, the relationship between art and pop culture, the influence of science fiction on philosophy and vice-versa, and the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche. His essay "Shifting Coalitions and the Responsibility of Persons" will be included in the anthology Free Will and Buddhist Philosophy, to be published by Rutledge in 2016. Ben is currently co-editing two anthologies with Marie Friquegnon: Great Disputes: Iconic Clashes in Philosophy and Window to Truth: Collected Papers of Raziel Abelson. He has also been a vocalist for various local NYC hard rock and heavy metal bands, including Scribes of Fire and God Ox.
